New Visions Students Celebrate Year of the Snake

Second-graders at New Visions Elementary School celebrated the Chinese New Year with a full course of learning activities and a full menu of food. The students, many wearing celebratory red clothing, cut out paper lanterns, solved word puzzles relating to Chinese culture, learned about Chinese astrology and made colorful headdresses as part of the festivities. "Our students genuinely enjoy learning about other cultures through their arts and foods," said teacher Lynn Albrecht, organizer of the annual event.

The luncheon, which was funded by the second-grade teachers and classroom aides, provided each student with a sampling of traditional Chinese-American foods ordered from a local restaurant. The menu included flavored chicken and beef, fried rice, steamed broccoli, egg rolls, noodles and fortune cookies.
