New Visions Elementary School second-grade students celebrated the beginning of the astrological Year of the Dragon on the Chinese calendar with a full menu of food and a flurry of activities. The students created paper lanterns, solved word puzzles relating to Chinese culture, and colored Year of the Dragon headdresses as part of the festivities. "Our students genuinely enjoy learning about other cultures through their arts and foods," said teacher Lynn Albrecht, organizer of the annual event.

The program, which was funded by the second-grade teachers and classroom aides, provided each student with a sampling of traditional Chinese-American foods ordered from a local restaurant, including flavored chicken and beef, fried rice, steamed broccoli, egg rolls, noodles and fortune cookies.
