Nassau County Council of School Superintendents recognizes Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham

The Nassau County Council of School Superintendents honored Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham on his upcoming retirement on Aug. 20 and for his many years of devoted service to the Freeport School District.

Dr. Kuncham has served the Freeport School District for 30 years, serving as superintendent of schools for the past 15 years. Prior to that, he served as deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent for business. He leaves a legacy of success in all areas, built upon his innovative, visionary approach to education and unwavering leadership. 

“Throughout his career, Dr. Kuncham has advocated for child-centered education, emphasizing holistic growth beyond academics,” NCCSS President and Glen Cove City School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maria Rianna said. “Under his guidance, the Freeport School District has achieved unprecedented success with record-high graduation rates while providing world-class opportunities for all students.” 

“Thank you for this honor,” Dr. Kuncham said. “I am truly honored to be part of the NCCSS and to serve as the superintendent of the Freeport Public Schools. The community gave me the opportunity to serve and I could not have done it without the support of my colleagues and the dedication of the staff in our school district. I would do it all over again.”

Dr. Kuncham has collaborated with colleges, universities and notable institutions, including NASA, to bring advanced science research opportunities to students. He has made mental health and wellness a priority and has introduced numerous programs, including wellness centers in each school, to ensure all students have the resources and skills to successfully meet their daily challenges. He has ensured that the district’s curriculum include a lifelong appreciation of the arts and the important role the arts play in a well-rounded education. Under his leadership, the district has been recognized as a Best Community for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants. His support of the district numerous athletic programs has resulted in local and state championships, with several student-athletes continuing their athletic careers on the college level. 

Dr. Kuncham is a passionate advocate promoting peace on a local, state and global level. He has inspired students, staff and the community through annual peach concerts, peace marches and numerous humanitarian endeavors. 

Dr. Kuncham’s legacy includes the distinction of being the first Indian-American superintendent of schools in New York State. The foundations for success that he has established will continue to be the building blocks for the Freeport School District to excel and for all students to receive the opportunities they deserve to achieve success.
