J.W. Dodd’s Music Teacher Vashti Burke Honored

John W. Dodd Middle School music teacher, Ms. Vashti Burke, was recognized as Educator of the Year by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport. Ms. Burke has been a music educator for Freeport Public Schools for the past 24 years.

"Ms. Burke is a multi-faceted music educator with a plethora of talents. She excellently moves from teaching in the classroom, to directing the Dodd musical on stage, and inspiring the young ladies of Dodd to be strong, smart, and bold. Ms. Burke epitomizes what it means to teach with heart and to serve selflessly," said Ms. Johanne Ligonde, Principal of Dodd Middle School.

During her tenure at Freeport, Ms. Burke has taught general music, music in our lives, theater and chorus. She founded the Dodd Drama Company and Ladies of Dodd, both of which she is an advisor.

"I am so honored and grateful to be recognized by the Long Island Arts Council in this special way," said Ms. Burke during the awards brunch. "My students are my reasons why and my inspiration. As a Freeport alumna, I take additional pride in knowing that I help to shape students in their arts journey."

In attendance to support Ms. Burke was Board of Education President Maria Jordan - Awalom, Principal Johane Ligonde and Freeport High School Principal Gisselle Campbell-Ham.
