March 2022

Dear Freeport Families,

We are excited to invite you and your family, as part of our commitment to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, to participate in our Equity Challenge2022 beginning the week of April 4th, 2022. For the past several years, Freeport Public Schools has been engaged in an ongoing journey of learning, discovery and reflection regarding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. We are committed to providing welcoming, affirming, positive and equitable school environments for our students, staff and families. Last year as part of our ongoing professional development, many of our staff engaged in Freeport Public Schools' Equity Challenge. This was an amazing and powerful experience for the participants.

The Equity Challenge allows participants to gain knowledge, insight and a deeper understanding of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Over the course of our 21 week challenge, participants will receive videos, articles and other resources that will include multiple perspectives and encourage deep thought, reflection and discussion. This self-guided learning journey will look at topics such as allyship, bias, activism, disability, cultural competence, and more. Families will receive a weekly email on a topic which will include some background information, videos and articles to further your knowledge and understanding. The Equity Challenge can spark meaningful conversations for you and your family. You can participate with your children if you wish. For secondary level students, this can be a very meaningful shared learning opportunity, and we hope you will choose to participate.

To participate in the Equity Challenge, please complete the Equity Challenge Form by March 29th, 2022. We will be hosting a virtual kickoff event to welcome all participants on this exciting adventure on March 31st at 6:00pm. A link for the virtual event will be sent to those who have signed up for the Equity Challenge 2022.

Freeport Public Schools is excited to include our families as we continue to enhance our understanding of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Danielle Ballard, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at 516-867-8991 or your building principal.

Regards,
Dr. Kishore Kuncham
