Celebrating Read Across America

Classrooms at Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School in Freeport were quieter than usual as students sat intently focused on the guest readers in their classrooms celebrating Read Across America Day. To share their love of reading and to instill in the students the importance of reading and creating their own stories to share, guest readers read their favorite books to students throughout the day.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Jonathan Bloom, Freeport High School Valedictorian Elise Smith, Salutatorian Karina Rios, senior student-athletes Arianna Martinez, who is ranked ninth in the Class of 2022, and Gilbert Rosario, who is ranked eighth in the Class of 2022, several district administrators, students from Freeport High School and support staff were among the day's guest readers.

Dr. Kunchan visited Carissa Grimaldi's dual-language class to read "A Computer Called Catherine" by Suzanne Slade, an inspiring true story of African American mathematician Katherine Johnson who counted and computed her way to NASA and helped put a man on the moon. Dr. Kuncham stressed to the students the importance of always following your dreams to achieve goals. "Always remember, you are the changemakers. You can be anything you want to be," Dr. Kuncham said. "Follow your dreams, work hard and you will succeed in achieving your goals.
