The fourth-grade dual-language students from Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School have been named the winners of the New York Boat Show's First Annual Clean Water Campaign contest.

Students collected used plastic materials and more than 100 plastic water bottles throughout the months of November, December and January. Using those materials, the students put their imaginations and artistic skills to work creating innovative, upcycled art projects made from plastic bottles, plastic caps, coffee cup stoppers, straws and many other materials. The students created beautiful sea turtles, colorful fish and one giant octopus. They also wrote persuasive essays and created eye-catching posters to raise awareness about plastic pollution and educating and encouraging others to recycle and make a positive impact on the environment.

In addition to being named the winner of the contest, the students were awarded a grant to fund their continued environmental efforts in protecting New York's waterways.

The New York Boat Show First Annual Clean Water Campaign contest invited elementary, middle school and high school students from across New York state to create a project that depicts how reducing plastic can help protect New York's water resources and environment. The contest took place during the annual boat show at the Jacob Javitz Center in Manhattan.
