Message from the Superintendent - Teacher Appreciation Week - May 3rd - 7th
Posted on 05/03/2021

Dear Freeport Families,

This week, May 3rd - May 7th, is Teacher Appreciation Week. I have the deepest admiration for all our teachers do for our children, families, colleagues and the community. To be a teacher requires a varied skill set. More than the instruction of a topic, teachers are educating the whole child. On any given day, an educator is an instructor, facilitator, mediator, mentor, counselor, nurse, caretaker, and more. Carl Jung said one looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has required us to adjust our work and home lives in ways we never imagined. Yet, our teachers rose to the challenges and continued to adapt and adjust as we moved through new phases. They never wavered from their ultimate goal of providing our students with the best educational opportunities. Their concern for the health and well-being of our children continued whether the students were in-person or remote. Our teachers managed to find the time and ways to reach out to students and give them whatever support was needed. As educators, they became the change that was needed and transformed complications into successful outcomes. This has been a year of growth and I am inspired for our future as we move ahead with the knowledge and gains we have made in our use of technology and our understanding of the health and wellness needs of our students and each other.

Great teachers positively impact the life of a child. Many of us still remember and can name that wonderful teacher or teachers who made a difference in our lives. Being an educator is a profession, but it is also a gift to be shared. Our teachers are truly changemakers for all they do each day to motivate and support our students. Working in partnership with our Freeport families, they have made sure our students are thriving. Please reach out to your child's teacher during this Teacher Appreciation Week to say thank you for making a difference in the lives of our Freeport children and families.
