The members of Freeport High School's Class of 2021 were filled with anticipation and happiness as they joined members of the board of education, administration and community members for the Freeport School District's 53rd annual Scholarship and Honors Program on June 7. The annual ceremony is one of the district's several socially distanced, indoor assemblies to close out the 2020-2021 school year and bring back a sense of normalcy since the pandemic halted most school activities and celebrations over the past year and a half.
Community organizations and various school groups generously donated more than $93,000 in scholarships which were awarded to deserving members of the Class of 2021 who met or exceeded the criteria in the areas of academics, leadership, athletics, the arts, the ability to succeed while overcoming obstacles, and outstanding community service.
Freeport High School Principal Joseph Mille began the program by congratulating the students and thanking those who so generously donated to make this evening a success. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham expressed appreciation to all those who provided scholarships and congratulated the students on achieving their goals.
"We are always proud of our students' accomplishment, but these students have navigated the COVD-19 pandemic and continued to excel despite the challenges," said Dr. Kuncham. "You have learned lessons in flexibility, how to navigate alternate paths to achieve your goals and most importantly, perseverance. These skills will serve you well as you leave Freeport Schools and set your own course."
Board of Education President Vilma L. Lancaster addressed the students and the scholarship donors. "This is an occasion of pride for all of us as we come together to celebrate and share our students' academic achievements," said President Lancaster. "This past school year has been truly challenging. Despite the obstacles, these students being honored have persisted and stayed focused on their goals to achieve academic excellence."
The Class of 2021 valedictorian Shyanne Gardner and salutatorian Mia Sorrentino were warmly introduced, and both were awarded medals for their outstanding achievements, in addition to the several scholarships and awards they received for their commitment to academics, community service and more.
While social-distancing and capacity limitations meant students could not bring guests, the event was live-streamed for families, friends and donors to view and share the surprise of learning which scholarships and honors they would receive - an ongoing tradition of the district's program.
The district congratulates all the scholarship recipients from the Class of 2021 and thanks the numerous donors who make the event possible.
