Message from the Superintendent of Schools

June 2020

Dear Freeport Families,

This is it! - We have come to the end of another school year! This is the time we look back at the amazing accomplishments of our students. Certainly, this year has been like no other. When we began in September, we couldn't foresee a global pandemic closing our schools mid-year. In true Freeport Public Schools spirit, we pulled together as a team for our children. We appreciate your partnership as we navigated our way through E-Learning, Grab and Go meals and safety measures. Our theme for the 2019-20 school year is "Be the Change" and this year has definitely been about rising to the unprecedented challenges and changes and making a significant difference.

Despite the trying and dynamic times, we remained united and "Freeport Strong." We are proud the tremendous efforts of our students, staff and families ensured our children were cared for physically and emotionally as they learned through instruction at home. There were amazing accomplishments by our students this year in academics, athletics and the performing arts prior to our closing. While we missed many of the events and milestones planned for the remainder of the year, we were able to celebrate and honor our students through virtual award ceremonies and joyous parades. We are determined Changemakers and nothing can stop us from sharing our commitment and caring for our children. I am truly proud of our students who have shown remarkable determination and resilience.

At this time, we are working diligently for the re-opening of schools in September, although we are awaiting required guidance from the Governor's office, New York State Education Department & other agencies. We will continue to work with local, state and other required agencies and officials as part of our planning efforts. Without additional guidance, or knowing if the Governor will allow re-opening, we cannot solidify any plans. As we continue this critical work, we will keep you updated with information as we receive it.

I wish you all the best for a relaxing summer. Please take advantage of the numerous and fantastic virtual summer programs planned for our students. You can find more information on our website. As COVID-19 is still with us, be careful and safe as we go through the phases of re-opening. Please continue to practice wearing masks, social distancing and washing your hands frequently. Be safe and well and I do hope to see you all in September.

Regards,

Dr. Kishore Kuncham
