New Visions School hosted its eighth annual Peace and Leadership Award Presentation, where several classes performed songs and recited poetry to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Songs included "Un Mundo Mejor," "Get Back Up Again," "His Dream Lives On," "Just the Way You Are," "We Are The World," and "Hero."

New Visions staff and student parents were in attendance, along with district members of the board of education, administrators and New York State Assemblywoman Judy Griffin.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham applauded students on their inspirational performances and urged them to continue to be kind, gentle and caring to each other. "As was quoted by Dr. King, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,'" Dr. Kuncham said. "Every day, be aware of the things that are wonderful around you. If something is not right, stand up."

The assembly also recognized five students who were nominated for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award. Jasmin Bogle-Villafuerte was crowned the winner of the award, based on her ability to demonstrate the non-violent virtues and qualities of Dr. King.
