Community members filled Freeport High School's Performing Arts Center on Jan. 13 to hear several motivational speakers and watch a documentary on America's journey toward justice.
The film, "Defining Moments," was directed by Alan Ginsberg and follows the story of several civil rights activists during the civil rights movement in North Hempstead. Interviewees discussed the inequality that African Americans faced in housing, schools, practices, jobs and more.
The message behind the film resonated when the speakers began to discuss the partnership that was formed between the African American and Jewish communities. The film's intent was to encourage people to appreciate diversity and work together to stand up against inequality. "There are people who care for the same things you care for," said Bernice Sims in the film. She is a civil rights activist and the author of the book "Detour Before Midnight."
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham thanked the community for coming to view this important documentary, which he described as an invaluable tool in preserving the town's civil rights history. "This evening, you will see how we can turn our passions and beliefs into action and become change makers," he said. "Every year, we are inspired by our motto and this year our motto is 'Be the Change.' We are committed to be the change. Our students and our staff are leaders."
The moderators of the event, Dr. Jacci Harris and Christine Waters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People also led the audience in the singing of "Lift Every Voice and Sing." It was a great night of empowerment, support and unity.
