Students Took a Dive into Maritime Traditions

Bayview Avenue School's fourth grade students participated in hands-on and interactive workshops on occupational traditions during a visit from the Long Island Traditions Maritime Folk Arts School.

While rotating to eight different stations, they had the exciting opportunity to operate maritime gadgets, hold sea life and create traditional objects. Each station was led by several maritime experts, such as baymen, commercial fishermen, model boat builders, decoy carvers, trap fishermen and landscape artists.

Throughout the experience, students learned about the concepts of folklore, folklife and various maritime traditions including working on the bay, the responsibilities of dragger fishermen, decoy carving and duck hunting and bay houses.

Since maritime traditions are rapidly vanishing from Long Island, it is critical that students learn about these resources before they disappear.
