The Freeport community came together on Oct. 2 for its final peace pole dedication at the district's administration building. Staff, members of the Board of Education, administration, Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School students and Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé attended the ceremony.
Along with the district's mission to participate in the International Peace Pole Project movement, this celebration also went hand-in-hand with honoring International Day of Non-Violence and the 150 year anniversary of the life of Mahatma Gandhi.
Atkinson students gathered around the pole and performed songs promoting peace and harmony, and reiterated quotes about peace from influential leaders, including Ron Hall, John Lennon, Robin Williams, Mahatma Gandhi and Jimi Hendrix. Now, nine peace poles stand tall across the district, with one at each building.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham said he is honored to be part of the special dedication ceremony.
"There are over 200,000 peace poles across the globe, encompassing over 180 countries," Dr. Kuncham said. "The peace pole is a symbol of energy that we bring together here and through the peace pole we radiate, permeate that energy across the world. Thank you for being part of this celebration today."
