Fourth Graders Continue Participation in 5K Marathon

Freeport's New Visions School joined the 5K annual Girls On The Run Marathon on Dec. 8. This is the 14th season New Visions has participated in the international program, with a total of 18 fourth graders completing the fall cycle. Hosted at Hofstra University, 10 teachers volunteered as buddy runners during the 5K run, with Diana Octave-Boxill and Beverly Losee as the marathon run moderators.

Girls On The Run is an experiential after-school program that uses the power of running to promote a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. The curriculum creatively incorporates training for a 5K, with lessons that encourage girls to develop essential life skills. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games and discussing important issues, the girls experience the joy of simply being themselves. During the 12-week program, the girls are empowered with a greater sense of self awareness, a foundation in team building and a sense of achievement.
