The Freeport High School Red Devils varsity football team are the reigning Long Island Conference I Champions, after defeating the William Floyd Colonials in an intense, action packed game, 20-19, on Nov. 24 at Hofstra University. With this victory, the Red Devils are now ranked first in New York State for their conference.
Senior captain Jordan Jackson scored the first touchdown of the game on a 13-yard pass from junior quarterback Terrance Edmond. Floyd trailed tightly behind Freeport throughout the battle, but the Red Devils came out victorious in the end. Other top performers throughout the game were sophomore Jayvian Allen, who scored on a 22-yard pass from Edmond; senior captain Justin Lescouflair, who scored on a 58-yard run; and senior Giovanni Martini, who tacked on two extra points to the Freeport scoreboard.
Head coach Russ Cellan said it was a tremendous game that kept both teams on their toes. "It was a first-time experience being in a tight game like this and all the coaches are very proud of the way our team handled the situation and found a way to win."
The game also received an unbelievable turnout from the Freeport community. "The bleachers were solid red," Cellan said. "It showed how much pride the community takes in their football program."
"Our athletic program and especially our football team has been a source of pride for many years," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham said. "Their training, discipline, dedication and commitment to winning was clearly evident today. We are proud of their winning season and the fact that they are once again Long Island Champions."
Freeport Athletic Director Jonathan Bloom said, "This accomplishment is another example of the hard work and dedication put forth by the entire team and coaching staff, with support from the entire Freeport community."
This is Freeport's sixth Long Island Championship win, with four other victories against Floyd in 2016, 2010, 2009 and 2003. The Red Devils also won over Commack in overtime in 2000.
The Red Devils were undefeated this season, with a total of 12 victories. They also claimed the Nassau County Conference 1 title, after defeating the Oceanside Sailors 42-0.
