As part of a two-day writer's workshop, students at Dodd received a visit from Long Island author Jennifer Wolf Kam. Thirty students who have an interest in writing creative fiction had the opportunity to learn about characterization and dialogue, and shared their own creative pieces with Kam. Kam also discussed her first novel, "Devin Rhodes is Dead," a mystery that received the Children's Book of the Year Award from the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

Hardcover copies of the novel were purchased by the district and provided to students. The workshop, along with Kam's visit, helped to support students' passion for creative writing and promoted the importance of literacy.
