Join in Celebrating International Peace Day

On Saturday, Sept. 17, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham invites all community residents to join him in celebrating International Peace Day by participating in a special one-day Smile for Peace - Mile for Peace 13.1-mile peace walk.

Prior to the end of the 2015-2016 school year Dr. Kuncham, who was joined by members of the Freeport School District Board of Education, administration, staff, students and community residents, completed a multi-day 131-mile walk throughout the Village of Freeport promoting peace.

The purpose of the walk on Sept. 17 is to demonstrate that everyone can make a difference by promoting peace, healthy lifestyles and quality education for all children.

All Village of Freeport residents are encouraged to participate in all or part of this special walk for peace, which will have three different starting points. The first leg of the walk, which will be 4.2 miles, is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. at Archer Street School, 255 Archer St., and finish at Bayview Avenue School, 325 W. Merrick Road. The second leg, which will be 4.5 miles, will begin at 9:30 a.m. starting at the Bayview Avenue School and will finish at New Visions School, 80 Raynor St. The third and final leg of the peace walk, which will be 4.4 miles, will commence at 12 p.m. from New Visions School and finish back at Archer Street School.

The event will also support breast cancer research. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so by visiting this link, type Freeport Public Schools in the Team Box and make your donation.

Please join in celebrating International Peace Day by walking with your family, friends and neighbors to promote peace, healthy lifestyles and quality education.
