New Visions School honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a schoolwide assembly that centered on Dr. King's inspiring words and the movement he influenced.

"I think Dr. King had in mind our school rules to always be caring, respectful, responsible and safe when he had his dream," said New Visions School Principal Renee Crump-Dedmon.

Donna Snider's second-grade students, Lissette Demm's and Greta Villanueva's third-grade dual-language classes, and the fourth-grade chorus, under the direction of Ruth Breidenbach, took their turn on the risers to echo the words of Dr. King and perform songs in his honor.

"The fourth-graders are our role models," said Crump-Dedmon in her introduction to the student recognition awards. "The younger students look up to them." Each fourth-grade class nominated one classmate to be honored for demonstrating the exemplary qualities of Dr. King. Assistant Principal Susan DeLuca presented the top honor, the New Visions School Peace and Leadership Award, to Sameerah Lawal. Sameerah's name and photo are now on a special plaque that will be displayed in the school. The other students recognized, and honored with Martin Luther King medallions, were Dillon DeBourg, Breymy Ledesma Tavarez, Alexander Malik and Elise Smith. The program concluded with all students singing Pete Seeger's "The Hammer Song."
