Columbus kindergartners benefit from service project

Kindergartners at Columbus Avenue received hundreds of books as part of Read it Again, a special service project started by a Rockville Centre high school student.

Emily Byrne, a senior at South Side High School, collected gently used children's books from friends, family and neighbors as part of the project. Byrne, who loved books growing up, worked with fellow schoolmates Kaitlyn Schmeling and Kayla Trutt to collect as many books as they could for distribution. Columbus kindergartners then personally received a visit from the three girls, who read to the students and gave them the books with bookmarks. The ultimate goal of the project was to foster a love and appreciation for reading among the Columbus students.
