The Freeport High School theater department will be presenting performances of the one-act musical "Once on This Island" on Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 16 at 3 p.m.

"Once on This Island" is a contemporary show set in the French Antilles that tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who is determined to take on prejudice and hatred for the sake of love.

The nonstop song-and-dance musical was conceived by the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and is based upon the book "My Love, My Love" by Rosa Guy. The storyline borrows familiar themes from Disney's "The Little Mermaid" and Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet."

The directors of this production are music teachers Mahendra Morales and Monique Retzlaff. The student director is Nicholas Ashe.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens. Tickets can be reserved by calling 516-867-5300 or purchased at the door.
