Students enlisted in Freeport High School's Navy Junior ROTC, a program established in 2002, spent months rigorously practicing their drill routines in the school hallways as they prepared for the annual area manager's inspection and battalion parade on Dec. 19.

"Cadets, you were not just impressive, but stellar," praised Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham in his address to those gathered in the school gymnasium. Dr. Kuncham, joined by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Gerard Poole and Board of Education President Debra Mulé, watched as the 219 well-trained recruits in the battalion passed inspection with flying colors. The inspection, conducted by NJROTC Commander Joseph Hankins, included several drill teams who performed with precision.

One special guest at the event was retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Floyd"Hoss" Miller (Freeport High School Class of '49). Miller had the honor of presenting recruits with ceremonial ribbons and certificates. He was later presented with a framed poster created by Freeport students and was honored by the eponymous Rear Admiral Floyd"Hoss" Miller Exemplary Performance in Community Service ribbon.

"What a glorious day to recognize and honor the outstanding work of our cadets and their leaders," said Principal Linda Carter. Major Donald Moore, senior naval science instructor, served as emcee, and Chief Timothy McShan, naval science instructor, orchestrated the program.

Many of the students in the Freeport NJROTC anticipate staying active in the program for its college scholarship benefit before pursuing a naval career.
