Posted on 06/22/2012

Thanks to the generosity of the Freeport community and other Freeport supporters, more than $70,000 in scholarships was awarded to Freeport High School's Class of 2012 at the school's 44th annual "Scholarship and Honors" night.

"We are here to celebrate our students' hard work, commitment, and accomplishments. They have taken advantage of all the great educational opportunities made available to them," stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. "On behalf of the Board of Education, thank you to everyone for your generous scholarship donations." Dr. Kuncham, along with Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Special Projects Dr. Mary Bediako and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Wafa Westervelt, presented the Better Schools Partnership (Ameresco, Inc.) award to 15 graduating seniors, and the Superintendent's Cabinet Scholarship was given to Freeport senior Stephanie Morales.

Freeport High School Class of 2012 Valedictorian Brea Baker won the Better Schools Partnership (Ameresco, Inc.) award and several other notable scholarships, including the Bayview Avenue School PTA - Thomas Washington Jr. Memorial Scholarship and Freeport Rotary Scholarship. Salutatorian Lakiea Simmons was the recipient of the Athena Club of Freeport Memorial Scholarship. D'Brickashaw Ferguson's parents were also on hand to award $2,500 each to four graduating seniors - Tyler Adams, Alexis Johnson, Emerick Martin and Stephanie Morales - as part of the D'Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation Scholarship. Ferguson, a left tackle for the New York Jets, is a 2002 graduate of Freeport High School, and he continues to give back to the community he was raised in.

"We are most appreciative to all the people who made these scholarships and awards possible for the fine students of Freeport High School," stated Freeport High School Principal Ernest J. Kight. "These generous scholarships help our students in their quest to pursue post-secondary education. There are so many wonderful people, organizations and companies that continue to support Freeport students and we thank them for all they do."
