The Freeport Public Schools Board of Education has announced the resignation of Board of Education President Debra McQuillan effective June 30th, 2012. Mrs. McQuillan, whose term expires on June 30th, 2013, is resigning for health reasons.

For the last fifteen years, Mrs. McQuillan has been devoted to the betterment of the Freeport School District. She worked hard to garner community support for the bond issue that ultimately resulted in the construction of New Visions Elementary School. During her tenure on the Board, the district managed to pass every budget, and during the six years of her Board Presidency, she assisted in keeping the average tax levy increase at a remarkably low 1.98%.

"I have proudly served the children and the community in many capacities for many years," said Mrs. McQuillan. "My passion and love for Freeport has brought much joy in my life. It is unfortunate that I am unable to continue my term, but my health must come first. I know there are many who share my hopes and dreams for this district and I look forward to working with all of you in the future."

"She has been one of our strongest supporters and leaders for a very long time, and these qualities will be sorely missed," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. "We know Mrs. McQuillan will continue to be a staunch child advocate and we fully expect to realize her contributions and energy in the future."

Fellow Board members of Mrs. McQuillan also weighed in. "As Vice President and Acting President of the Board, I was sad to learn that Debbie is resigning because there are few I've known who care as much about these schools and community," said Board member Debra Mule. "Even though she won't be on the Board any longer, I'm sure we will all benefit from her ongoing contributions and support."

"I have served on the Board of Education for 18 years, and it has been a pleasure to work with Debbie on behalf of the Freeport community," said Board member Ron Ellerbe. "She personifies the meaning of community service."

Mrs. McQuillan has been a leader throughout her time here, and was recognized as such by the Rotary Club, earning their Civic Leadership Award. She has been president of the Board of Education for the past six years, and a Board of Education trustee for the past eight. Her leadership roles extend to the PTA where, in addition to being president of the PTA Council, she was Co-President of the Columbus Avenue School PTA and the First Vice President of the Archer Street School PTA. For her efforts with the PTA, she was awarded the NYSPTA Distinguished Service Award, and given the PTA lifetime membership award.

Mrs. McQuillan was also recognized by the Childcare Council of Nassau with the Advocate in Training Award, and established "Friends of Freeport School Children".

After the Board reorganizes for the 2012-13 school year, it will meet to discuss the alternatives available for filling the vacancy created by Mrs. McQuillan's resignation.
