The New Visions School of Discovery and Exploration in the Freeport School District marked the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 with a solemn but hopeful gathering of students, staff, parents and special guests.

The New Visions flag patrol team, headed by Michael Perdomo, a fourth grader in Mrs. Lulay's class, provided the backdrop for the ceremony. The student body, asked to wear red, white and blue, were lined up on the perimeter of the front courtyard surrounding the flagpole. Students walked to their places as reflective music played in the background. This special program was orchestrated by music teacher Ruth Breidenbach.

"It's a day when we remember those who gave selflessly to protect our safety," stated Principal Renée Crump in her speech, which also emphasized pride in our country, our diversity, and our oneness and similarities.

"It's an honor and a privilege to be part of your 9/11 memorial. Thank you," said special guest Julius Ellison, the former Fire Chief of Freeport and one-time member of FDNY Engine Company 236. He was one of four special guests to attend. Also on hand were Freeport Police Officer Steven M. Rampanelli, Freeport Fireman Jared Staton, and Former Captain of the Freeport Fire District Charlie McEneaney.

"When you see on television 9/11/2001, you know what happened that notable day," added New Visions Assistant Principal Susan Deluca in her closing remarks.

There was a moment of silence with bowed heads and closed eyes to honor those who have fallen and those who continue to fight to keep America safe.
