Paying Tribute To Our Veterans
Posted on 11/09/2011

The Columbus Avenue Early Childhood Center opened its doors and hearts to our nations veterans with a star spangled salute to those who gave unselfishly to protect our country. This kindergarten assembly included the premiere of the school Flag Patrol, a brief history lesson by Principal Peggy Miller, performances of patriotic songs, a presentation to local veterans, and a solemn rendition of taps performed by Freeport High School students.

The show opened with the newly formed Flag Patrol marching forward to present our nations colors and signaling the assembly to recite The Pledge of Allegiance and sing our national anthem. Principal Peggy Miller then briefly explained why Veterans Day is such an important holiday in the United States, and why schools are closed on that day. She made a point of welcoming and introducing those veterans who were in the audience.

Students in Ms. Michelle Iannuzzo's kindergarten class performed "I Love My Country" before Ms. Tracy Filipowski and Ms. Karen Haynes students performed "Free Like Me." These classes had been rehearsing the staging of these songs with music teacher Stephanie Arnell for many weeks.

Local veterans Jessica Lopez, mother of Columbus Avenue student Yzabella Thomas, and Clarence Matthews, grandfather of student Kai Leveque were given certificates and other tokens of appreciation for their military service. Both spoke briefly about where and how they had served our country.

The shows finale featured a solemn performance of "Taps" by eleventh grader Nyle Higgs and twelfth grader Michael Pecoraro, both from Freeport High School.
