The Board of Regents is replacing the current NYS Standards with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, Mathematics, and Prekindergarten. These standards were officially adopted on January 11th. PDF files of these standards are attached.
These Common Core Standards are more rigorous than previous state standards. The changes in English language arts and literacy primarily include having children respond to literature in a cultural context. This will require students to comprehend, reflect upon, and interpret literature from a wide variety of genres and a range of American and world cultures. Therefore, students will be required to interpret material read from other cultural perspectives.
