Freeport High School’s performing arts center was full of anticipation as members of the Class of 2024, their families, friends, Board of Education members, administrators and community members gathered for the 56th annual Scholarship and Honors Program on June 3.
With more than 100 scholarships totaling over $108,000, Freeport seniors were chosen based on their academic performance, community service, leadership initiatives, participation in fine arts and their desire to continue their education after graduation.
The celebration opened with a welcome from Freeport High School Principal Giselle Campbell-Ham congratulating the students on their outstanding excellence both in and out of the classroom.
“We are here today because the students of Freeport High School are dedicated and determined to excel not only academically, but athletically, creatively and philanthropically,” she said. “Your achievements are a testament to your commitment and your passion, not just for learning, but for becoming global citizens.”
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham expressed his pride for the students receiving scholarships. “We are recognizing the outstanding achievements of our seniors and their hard-earned scholarships and honors,” he said. “Your dedication, commitment and grit have brought you to this moment of well-deserved recognition. Your academic excellence, character and determination will undoubtedly lead to your future success.”
Dr. Kuncham also addressed those who generously donated this year’s scholarships. “Without you, this evening would not be possible,” Dr. Kuncham said. “Thank you for your generosity and support of our students and for being part of their future endeavors.”
Students anxiously waited to hear their names called and become a recipient of one or more of the many district and community scholarships.
Closing the ceremony, Class of 2024 valedictorian Jeremy Dominquez and salutatorian Etienne Sasenarine were introduced. Both were awarded medals for their remarkable achievements.
A special aspect of the evening was acknowledging Director of Guidance Emma Perdomo for her dedication and inspiring service to the students of Freeport High School. The 56th Scholarship and Honors Program was the last of her career as she retires at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.
