A beautiful spring evening brought Freeport Public Schools’ Board of Education members, administrators, students, families and community members to the Performing Arts Center on May 7 for a celebration of music and the arts that showcased the exceptional talents of Freeport’s high school students.
The annual Spring Festival of the Arts featured performances by the school’s instrumental ensembles including combined concert orchestra, freshmen orchestra and sinfonietta, under the direction of Jill Boardman and concert band and wind ensemble director Michael LaSorsa.
Ms. Boardman started the concert with the combined orchestra, but handed the baton to James Kelly, Hofstra University student teacher, to conduct three of the four pieces performed – “Symphony No. 1” by J. Bologne, “Colors of the Wind” by A. Menken and S. Schwartz, and “Finale” from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
The concert band took the stage with Queens College student teacher Paul Giorlando conducting under the guidance of Director Michael LaSorsa. Musial selections performed included “C-141 Starlifter” by R.D. Standridge, “Centuria” by J. Swearingen and “Encanto” by R.W. Smith.
In addition to the musical performances, attendees were treated to a slideshow presentation featuring works of art created by the students. The presentation showcased the wide range of artistic mediums students are taught and reflected the diverse talents and passions of Freeport High School's budding artists.
The Festival of the Arts closed with performances by the sinfonietta and the wind ensemble, who delivered stellar performances that captivated the audience and demonstrated the depth of musical talent at Freeport High School.
