A Night of Jazz at Freeport High School

The jazz bands from Freeport High School, J.W. Dodd Middle School and Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School showcased their musical talents at the district’s annual Night of Jazz.

Coming to the event for the first time were the student-musicians from Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School who performed several pieces highlighting the skills and techniques they have learned since joining the jazz band including the “Five Note Blues” by Doug Beach and George Shutack and “Calle Caliente” by Mike Lewis.

J.W. Dodd Middle School’s Jazz Band played a lively performance of the “French Quarter Funk” by Charlton Underwood and “El Tigre” by Carl Strommen providing a dynamic showcase of the skills needed to highlight the intricacies of both instrumental jazz pieces.

Freeport High School jazz band director Michael LaSorsa introduced the student-led brass ensemble, “A Pinch of Brass,” who then performed two pieces “A Closer Walk with Thee” by Canadian Brass and “Brooklyn” by Nat Mcintosh. As they performed, the audience was astounded by their talent and the ensemble serves as a testament to the district’s commitment to fostering creativity among students and empowering them to develop their passions beyond classroom instruction.

Closing the evening was the Freeport High School Jazz Band who captivated the audience with four high energy pieces “Blue Note Blues” by Jeff Jarvis, “Blue Bossa” by Kenny Dorham, the Stevie Wonder hit “Isn’t She Lovely” arranged by Mike Tomaro and the Benny Goodman jazz favorite “Sing, Sing, Sing.”

As the annual Night of Jazz came to an end, the performing arts center was filled with applause for each of the performing groups.
