Freeport School District honored with national recognition for Best Communities for Music Education 2024

For the sixth consecutive year, the Freeport School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education award presented by the National Association of Music Merchants.

“We are extremely proud to receive this national award in recognition of our commitment to instill in our students an understanding and lifelong appreciation for the important role music plays in our lives,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham said. “Music brings us great joy and we are proud of the numerous and varied music programs we offer our students which have enabled them to perform at many prestigious events and venues. Our concerts and theatrical productions and other performances throughout the year are a true testament to our commitment to providing a well-rounded education and to our students’ dedication and hard work to perfect their musical talents.”

This national award program recognizes and celebrates the outstanding efforts of administrators, teachers, students, parents and communities who have committed to making music education and appreciation an integral component of a well-rounded education. This annual national award is presented to school districts that demonstrate a exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the district was required to answer detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its 15,000 global member companies and individual professionals worldwide. The foundation advances active participation in music making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs.
