Enhanced media production studio at Freeport High School inspires creativity
Freeport Public Schools is enhancing the education of Freeport High School students after expanding and upgrading the school’s media production studio.

The media production studio offers an enriching lineup of courses for students to explore and excel in the fields of media production, design and the rapidly growing field of competitive gaming.

"With an ever-evolving digital landscape, our students interested in media production need the tools and resources to explore their passions and develop the skills needed to succeed in the field,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham. “The updated media and production studio serves as a hub for both technical proficiency and creative acumen, ensuring students are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the industry.”

At the heart of the studio's offerings are the Studio Broadcasting course and the Video Media Production course. Both courses are designed to provide a comprehensive education in media production as these specialized programs guide students through every stage of the production process, from conception to execution.

“We have worked to develop courses that emphasize artistic and technical terms, techniques, and skills inherent in media production,” said Director of Instructional Technology Mike Fink. “From competitive gaming to digital storytelling and design, students who utilize the studio should emerge with the diverse set of skills and interests required in the fast-changing and evolving field.”

Additionally, the upgraded studio is home to the expanded equipment used by the Freeport Esports team. In the 2022-2023 school year, Freeport High School introduced its Esports team, which secured ninth place in a state-level Super Smash Brothers competition. With the resources and technology available, the team will have even greater opportunities to further excel in competitive gaming.

Beyond the realm of Esports, the studio's computer resources play a pivotal role in shaping the creative landscape for students enrolled in the Video and Media Production course by utilizing the industry-standard Adobe software for sophisticated editing tasks, while Graphic Design classes utilize both Adobe and Canva platforms to hone their design skills. This interdisciplinary approach emphasizes the district’s commitment to offering multiple opportunities for students to master a wide range of skills and talents prior to graduation.

Through hands-on experiences and detailed guidance, students participating in media production classes, will develop the skill sets essential for success. From mastering green-screening techniques to refining their video editing abilities, students acquire practical experience in video production, writing, and lighting/sound design. Each skill is taught with a focus on real-world application, empowering students to explore their unique interests and unleash their creative potential.
