Leo F. Giblyn School Share Acts of Kindness
Posted on 09/27/2011

The Leo F. Giblyn Elementary School in Freeport recognized the tenth Anniversary of September 11, with a variety of commemorative activities. The day started with a moment of silence followed by the entire school singing Lee Greenwood's popular anthem "God Bless the USA" (aka "Proud to Be an American") from their classrooms.

The school librarian-media specialist Lisa Eisenberg, worked with the students on developing an activity closely tied to the book "Kindness Is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler" by Margery Cuyler. In the story, Mrs. Ruler is a teacher who charges each of her students with performing five acts of kindness. In a similar vein, an in-school activity challenged the Giblyn students to create "Be Kind Hearts" to record their individual acts of kindness on heart cutouts some as simple as 'feeding my dog" and "helping my brother." These hearts were then fastened to a bulletin board outside the school library for all to see.
