The Institute of Creative Problem Solving has named Nyeem Maloney, a student at John W. Dodd Middle School in Freeport, a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury. Nyeem is among 75 students who have received this prestigious distinction and have been accepted by the Institute to pursue mathematics and mathematical science applications.

In order to quality for this honor, Nyeem competed against 850 of the top-ranking students nominated from school districts on Long Island. Selection by the Institute implies that he is among the top one-tenth of one percent in math of all students on Long Island in his grade level. A highly selective process was used to determine the winners, including a rigorous entrance exam, nomination, school transcript, recommendation of Nyeem's last math teacher and a brief statement written by the student.

As part of this program, Nyeem will spend 60 hours in class during 20 Saturday mornings immersed in a curriculum that will cover mathematical topics from algebra, geometry and number theory not included in the standard courses of study. Additionally, selected topics in science will be explored.

In addition to this outstanding recognition, Nyeem has also been selected to participate in the Brookhaven National Laboratory-MoMath Gifted Mathematics Program during the 2011-2012 school year, where he will advance his knowledge of mathematics. During this past summer, Nyeem also participated in a robotics program through the Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University.
