Archer Street Elementary School students participated in the St. Jude Children's Hospital Math-A-Thon this year and collected nearly $1,200, bringing their ten-year total to over $27,000. Fourth-grade student Sheilly Duque earned the distinction of being named school champion in funds collected, having garnered a total of $209.

"The children are not just learning how to solve math problems, they are also learning the life lesson of helping others who are less fortunate," said Archer Street School Principal Paula Lein. "I want to thank the students and the Freeport community for their support."

The top ten students received prizes for their efforts, including backpacks, t-shirts, games and certificates. The Math-A-Thon is a fundraising program in which students obtain sponsors for the number of problems completed in a math "Funbook" distributed to all participants. Students ask family and friends for pledges based on an amount-per-problem or a one-time donation. After students complete their work, they collect the pledges, and all donations are sent to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
