Will lead to restoration of teaching positions and other program cut backs

On Monday afternoon, April 16, 2012 the members of the Freeport Teachers Association, in a second vote, accepted a proposal to modify their existing collective bargaining agreement by a vote of 75% to 25%.

The memorandum of Understanding (MOU) developed between the district leadership and the union calls for a deferment of the total salary increase and step over two years.

"We are very pleased," said Superintendent Kishore Kuncham. "As a result of this decision, the full-day kindergarten program, enrichment program, and other programs which would have been cut will be restored for the 2012-2013 school year. All teaching positions scheduled to be cut will be included in the proposed budget except for those positions not filled due to retirement."

Dr. Kuncham and central office administration had earlier volunteered to a second salary freeze for the 2012-2013 school year. The Administrators' Association has also volunteered to accept a freeze in their salaries for 2012 - 2013. "We are all working together to provide the best quality education for the children of Freeport," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham.
