Posted on 02/11/2013

February is designated as Black History Month and is a time to reflect upon and appreciate the many contributions that African Americans have made and continue to make to our country and the world. On Wednesday, February 6, the Student Government Association of Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus honored New Visions School Principal Renée Crump-Dedmon as part of their celebration of African-American leaders in Education, Health Services, Media, and the Arts.

The theme for the evening's event was "Living History: A Tribute to Excellence" and was held at the Kumble Theatre for the Performing Arts. Principal Crump-Dedmon was recognized "for outstanding contributions to the Field of Education". In addition to receiving a "Tribute to Excellence Award", each honoree was presented a Samsung Digital camera "to memorialize and inspire" others with their work. Other honorees included a medical doctor, physical education teacher and coach, founder and publisher of African Voices Magazine, news editor for Essence Magazine, and a financial news analyst and reporter for Reuters. Celebrating with Principal Crump-Dedmon was her husband, Kenneth, sister D'adra Crump and friend and colleague, Bayview Avenue School Principal Odette-Wills.
