"A strong and caring leader…a visionary and a fierce advocate for children" were some of the words used to describe Schools Superintendent Dr. Kishore Kuncham on the night he was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Advisory Council of the Freeport Salvation Army. Judging by the thunder of applause for remarks such as this, garnered during the course of the evening, it is safe to say that many in the room were in full agreement.

"What his presence in education brings to the community is felt day in and day out," said State Legislator David Denenberg during his presentation of a citation from the Nassau County Legislature that recognized Dr. Kuncham's ongoing efforts for the benefit of children in regional and state-wide organizations.

After a heartwarming introduction from author Cynthia Krieg, who praised Dr. Kuncham's efforts in securing and insuring better educational opportunities for all children, Dr. Kuncham was presented with the Salvation Army testimonial plaque.

"I want to see your continued support for public education. It's important to maintain quality education for students even in hard economic times," said Dr. Kuncham. He went on to thank and acknowledge the Salvation Army, the other honorees, and all those who attended this lovely dinner.
