Giblyn School Goes Global for International Day Celebration
Posted on 06/14/2012

Students at the Leo G. Giblyn Elementary School traveled the world without ever leaving Freeport during their annual International Day celebration.

The culmination of a full morning of activities gathered the student body into the cafeteria for the annual multicultural luncheon. Before a fork or set of chopsticks was lifted, groups representing each grade sang and danced for their classmates, teachers and honored guests. Giblyn School has celebrated Freeport's diversity with the International Day and Luncheon for over 20 years. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano issued a citation that recognized Giblyn School for "rendering significant contributions to the enhancement of our region."

The itinerary of grade-appropriate activities made an ordinary day in May one that was bustling with excitement. Kindergarteners were asked to bring in an artifact that related to their family heritage for the purpose of sharing with classmates. First graders unified their voices on the playground for a message of peace and understanding when they sang "It's a Small World." Second graders created an international rice cookbook that begat a recipe tasting which crossed cultural borders. Third graders went on a virtual African safari and explored the wildlife and culture of the continent. Fourth graders learned about cultural similarities and differences through books as they compared the fairytale Cinderella as retold in different countries.

Then they all learned the international recipe for a good time. A hearty luncheon with an international menu brought in from local restaurants was served buffet-style.
