Posted on 06/10/2013

Freeport High School librarian Rose Luna is nationally recognized as a leader and innovator among librarians. Ms. Luna was recognized for her extraordinary work as the recipient of the 2013 Library Journal Mover & Shaker award for her vision, advocacy for school libraries and public libraries, and professional development initiatives.

During a Freeport Board of Education meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham and the Board congratulated Ms. Luna on her accomplishments and dedication to the students and staff of the Freeport School District.

Throughout her career, Ms. Luna has strived to make a difference for students and her colleagues. In addition to the work she does on a daily basis at Freeport High School, she has conducted several national conference presentations, spoken at numerous state and local library associations, and co-authored a book titled "Make a Big Impact @ Your School Board Meeting." In addition to being a full-time teacher librarian at Freeport High School, she is also a part-time librarian at Freeport Memorial Public Library. Her dual role enables her to better assist students in using the resources available at both the school library and public library. Ms. Luna strives to build that partnership between the two libraries to ensure students receive the maximum benefits from both. Always looking to the future, she is focusing on continuing to integrate technology into the library services she oversees.

At the end of June, Ms. Luna will be honored at a luncheon at the American Library Association in Chicago, Ill.
