New Visions Spring Arts Showcase Spotlights Budding Talent
Posted on 06/12/2013

New Visions School staged its annual fine and performing arts spring showcase with an ambitious program indicative of the young talent being nurtured in the Freeport school system.

The show began with the school band, directed by Glenn Koski, playing a foursome of familiar folk songs that included "London Bridge" and "Skip to My Lou." The third-grade recorder ensemble, directed by Ruth Breidenbach, followed with two energetic songs, including Janet Day's "Blues Cruise." The orchestra, directed by Catherine Beck, continued the program with a trio of songs highlighted by a simplified arrangement of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."

The spotlight intensified briefly as New York State School Music Association participant piano soloists, second-graders Christian Gutierrez and June Cumento and fourth-grader Miguel Gutierrez, took their turns at the keyboard. Principal Reneé Crump-Dedmon presented each of the three with their NYSSMA testimonial medal.

The show resumed with the chorus, honors choir and mixed chorus, all directed by Ruth Breidenbach, belting out six songs and fittingly finishing with Ethan Bortnick's "It's All About Music."

The lobby of the building was decorated with a selection of student artwork created under the watchful guidance of art teacher Susan Johnson.
