Posted on 08/21/2013

The district's Summer Academy of the Arts provided an opportunity for more than 200 district students in grades 4-12 to continue their artistic development during the month of July and then demonstrate their growth in a culminating two-hour stage production called "The Power of the Arts." The program featured an art exhibit, original theatrical vignettes and performances from the beginner band, advanced band, orchestra, chorus and dance groups.

"We are very fortunate to have a superintendent and Board of Education who supports the arts," said Interim Director of the Arts Anne-Marie Hudley Simmons. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Board of Education Vice President Vilma Lancaster and high school Principal Linda Carter were on hand at the high school auditorium with family and friends of the students to observe the multifaceted program, which was performed under of the watchful eye of summer program coordinator Ruth Breidenbach.

The Freeport Summer Academy of the Arts initiative, under the outstanding coordination of Ruth Breidenbach, was sponsored by the 21st Century Community Learning Center's Literacy Through the Arts Program.
