Students participated in commemorative services on Sept. 11 with scheduled activities marking the 12th anniversary of the attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

"This morning we pause to remember the significance and impact that day had on our lives and will forever have," said New Visions School Principal Renee Crump-Dedmon at the ceremony attended by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham, Executive Director for Business James Robinson, and active and retired members of the Freeport Fire Department. "This is a very difficult day for all of us, but we know the significance," stated Kuncham in his solemn remarks to students, faculty and parents. "It's a day to remember, to reflect, and to recognize who we are and what we stand for."

At the Archer Street School ceremony, Principal Paula Lein addressed the students and staff gathered near the flagpole. "We have this ceremony to honor all those who perished," she said in a brief yet sensitive speech. "What remains constant is our commitment to liberty and the love of the United States of America."

Related school activities across the district included classroom discussions, solemn moments of silence, readings of essays, and the playing of patriotic songs such as Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be an American."
