On March 12th thirty-five students from the Freeport High School Student Government had a unique opportunity to visit the state capital. The purpose of the visit was to meet with legislative representatives to discuss funding for education in the Freeport School District and New York State. The students arrived in Albany early in the morning and first attended a rally led by Alliance for Quality Education in the convention center.

The students met with Senator John Flanagan and Assemblyman Brian Curran. Both the senator and assemblyman listened attentively as the students shared their concerns about state funding for Freeport schools and then invited the students to visit both the Senate and Assembly Chambers. The students had an opportunity to see open debate on the floor of the Assembly on education funding. This trip was a wonderful learning experience on the many intricate details of government. It also provided the students with the opportunity to express their opinions on issues of importance to them.
