Students at Dodd learned about the Underground Railroad on Long Island during a presentation about the topic by Dr. Kathleen Velsor.

Dr. Velsor, a professor at the School of Education at SUNY Old Westbury and author of the historical novel, "Brother & Me," spoke about the story of the Underground Railroad, which depicts heroic deeds of enslaved Africans and the search for religious freedom by Quakers. The discussion not only served to complement students' studies about slavery, but also tied into the district's observance of February as Black History Month.
