Pride and harmony filled the Performing Arts Center at the high school, as students showcased their vocal and dance skills in honor of Black History Month. The special assembly, which was held prior to a districtwide Black History program featuring students from all eight schools in the district, was comprised of inspiring quotes and motivating performances by the high school students for their peers.
Principal Linda Carter spoke to students about the importance of February as Black History Month, and how proud they ought to be in a country with so many equal opportunities for everyone regardless of race or creed.
"Today, we had the opportunity to see talented people provide an afternoon of entertainment, but know that nothing starts without an education," said Carter. "No matter what you choose to pursue, nothing is possible without an education. We are a melting pot here in America. We've all come from somewhere, and we all bring something to the table. That has been the case for many years, and we hope to continue it. You are our future, so we can only continue it with you."
The program featured students singing including the national anthem by Tyler Williams and "Lift Every Voice and Sing" by Michael Desir, a vocal performance by Serene Harmonics and dance performances by the high school's kickline team. It served not only as a precursor to the districtwide program, but also as another way for students to celebrate Black History with song and dance.
