One of the Dodd Science Club's recent projects served as a multifaceted lesson that taught students a variety of skills in character education, altruism and academics. The project, which involved the digging and embedding of plants outside of the school, was guided by Dodd teachers James Hauser and Rosette Jean-Baptiste, who serve as the club's advisors.
The project supplemented students' science lessons by demonstrating how plants and animals interact to create symbiotic relationships, which factors affect the growth of plants and which plants are best for attracting animal life. The purpose of the project was to re-establish the native ecology on school grounds, and is intended to provide food for pollinating insects and birds.
The project also taught the students the importance of caring for the environment, and handling such tasks with attention and responsibility. Planting and gardening techniques, and service to the community, are just two of the various skills the Science Club is teaching students through such projects.
