Students Study Milkweed Garden

Archer Street school second grade teacher Mrs. Crespi began an amazing project with her class five years ago to grow milk plants, which are the only plants that monarch butterflies lay their eggs on. Now, the school's milkweed garden is overflowing with milkweed plants.

Students recently worked with partners and observed the milkweed pods, drew and labeled diagrams and generated questions from observations. One recent observation included a hungry Monarch Caterpillar on a pod.

Each season, students compare and contrast their observations, discoveries and generate new questions. In addition, they research answers to questions using Pebblego Database, books and articles.
