The district spread their message to "be the change" through its annual districtwide Peace Concert & Art Exhibit. This special event also celebrated International Day of Peace, International Day of Non-Violence and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.
Members of the district's board of education, administration, staff and community were in awe of the talented students as each school building took the stage of the Freeport High School's Performing Arts Center. They also gazed at the amazing artwork displayed by students in the school lobby, which depicted images of peace, love and harmony.
Superintendent of School's Dr. Kishore Kuncham thanked district staff members, students and their families for making the event a very special night.
"We honor the birth of Gandhi and honor the incredible gift he shared with the world. We continue to believe in the power of using nonviolence to raise world peace and love against those countries, leaders, organizations and people who seek to dirty the ocean of humanity. Freedom and democracy are a basic right for all. By following Gandhi, we can uplift ourselves and others," Dr. Kuncham said. "There's a strength needed to combat injustice using the means of nonviolence. Gandhi himself understood this and stated, ‘We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed, but we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it.' As we celebrate Gandhi 150 today, let us honor his memory but most importantly remain true to his goal and his legacy. Let's be the change."
Dr. Kuncham and the administration also unveiled the district's new peace poster to the crowd.
