Posted on 10/30/2019

Dodd Middle School teacher Tracie Roberts and student Timaya Huggins were honored at the MentorNY Mentoring Benefit held at the Garden City Country Club. The duo won this recognition after being nominated by school social worker Felice Niland for demonstrating the benefits and rewards of mentoring.

During the benefit, Niland spoke to the crowd of what the program has done for students and Roberts spoke about what a wonderful experience it has been for her to mentor Timaya and how they have both grown together. Timaya gave an outstanding speech sharing what it means to her to have Roberts as her mentor and that she hopes to be a mentor one day as well.

The Mentor Program was started in 2008 by Niland and has continued for the past 11 years. It has grown from 12 mentors to 52 mentors, mentoring 76 students. MentorNY has offered great support to the school's program with training, technical assistance and ongoing encouragement. Teachers donate their time and efforts to spend one hour a week with the student they are mentoring.
